Who We Are
The BDIA was created to promote the growth of its members’ careers in the translation and interpreting fields. Members include language firm owners, hospitals, universities, government organizations, teachers, project managers, web and software developers, and translators and interpreters.

Background History

- In May 2021, the BDIA sought input from independent contractors on a proposed rule for determining employee and independent contractor status. BDIA members actively participated in these public forums, demonstrating their engagement and concern. Currently, over 75% of language professionals work as independent contractors, offering specialized, knowledge-based services that demand a high level of professionalism, ongoing education, and appropriate compensation. Mandating employee status for those who choose to be independent contractors would disrupt essential language access services, which are safeguarded under Bangladeshi law. This change could significantly impact the flexibility and effectiveness of language professionals, ultimately affecting the quality of services provided to the public.
Policies & Rules

- New Proposed Rule Could Classify Independent Translators and Interpreters as Employees Under the BD labor Law.
- On may 30, 2021, the Bangladesh labor a notice of proposed rulemaking that puts forward a restrictive interpretation of the “economic realities” test, which is used to determine an individual’s status as an employee or independent contractor for the purpose the BD Law.
- The new proposed economic realities test would include the following six factors: 1. Opportunity for profit or loss depending on managerial skill. 2. Investment by the worker and the employer 3. Degree of performance of the work relationship 4. Nature and degree of control 5. Extent to which the work performed is an integral part of the employer’s business 6. Skill and initiative
